Imphal, August 03 2010:
A one day state level seminar on "Assessment and Accreditation of Colleges in Manipur : Basic Issues" organized by the Oriental College, Imphal under the sponsorship of the Directorate of University and Higher Education, Government of Manipur was held today at the campus of Oriental College.
Dr RK Ranjan, Director of Academic Staff College, Manipur University, Canchipur and Dr Th Biren, Principal of Oriental College, Imphal attended the function as chief guest and president respectively.
Delivering the keynote address of the function, Kh Debendra, Lecturer SG of Oriental College said that the rapid expansion of higher education in India in the last few decades has been quantitative rather than qualitative which is contradictory to the emerging global scenario.
Therefore, enhancement of quality of higher education in India in conformity with global context and competence has been urgently left.
With this end in view, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) came into existence as the result of the recommendations by the National Policy on Education (1986) and the Programme of Action (1992) .
The NAAC has been instilling a momentum of quality consciousness among higher education institutions.
Speaking as chief guest, Dr RK Ranjan said that there are about 73 colleges in Manipur recognized by the state Directorate of University and Higher Education.
Out of these colleges only about 5 are recognized by the NAAC.
It is pertinent now to know the value of assessment and accreditation.
Once recognized by the NAAC the college or the institution will be eligible to receive fund for its development.
