A public meeting held today at Sawombung Thongkhong in connection with the arrest and alleged torture of Sarangthem Tomba of Sawombung Thongkhong by 4 Assam Rifles on September 27 who was later handed over police, has demanded immediate release of Tomba without any condition.
The meeting organised by the JAC Against the Arrest of Student S Tomba also condemned the excesses of AR as well as the torture meted out to Tomba by Lamlai police in custody.
It also resolved to launch strong agitation if Tomba is not released by tomorrow.
To repeal AFSPA 1958 from Manipur was another resolution adopted during the meeting.
Speaking in the meeting, mother of the victim said that while AR personnel arrested Tomba in the night of September 27, no arrest memo was furnished.
When she along with Meira Paibis went to the Chingarel AR post on the next morning, she was given arrest memo.
Moreover, even though the class X student was clad in a khudei while he was arrested, Tomba was found wearing camouflage fatigue when he was handed over to police, disclosed the mother.
In addition to numerous injury marks of physical torture on her son's body, the mother conveyed possibility of electric shock treatment to the private part of her son.
Tomba now in the custody of Lamlai police is refusing to take any food, said the mother.
Today's meeting was presided by representatives of AMUCO, AMOWVA, Sawombung Thongkhong Meira Paibi, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, PALEM, and the Apunba Lup.
