Imphal, November 29 2015:
A 29-year-old woman has been arrested for trying to sell her eight-month-old son at around 10 am today.
She was caught from Palace gate by Pureiromba market vendors and later handed over to the police.
Speaking to media persons, Moirangthem (O) Basanti, 29, w/o Joy (48) of Jiribam Leingangpokpi said the baby is her fourth child born to her in March at RIMS hospital.
She has a daughter and two other sons.
According to Basanti the family shifted to Sugnu looking for work after her husband was diagnosed with cancer post an accident.
With her husband bed-ridden and no source of income to feed the family, Basanti made the decision to give away her youngest son to any one willing to adopt.
She travelled to Imphal with an intention to find a willing couple who would adopt her 8 month old in return for some money.
She was caught by women vendors of Pureiromba market while making inquiries at a hotel at Palace gate.
Pureiromba market vendor Angom Keinahanbi said Basanti was caught while trying to give away the baby to two unidentified women from Chandel.
The women vendors suspect that the baby was not the woman's own child.
Basanti on the other hand vowed that the baby is her own.
The mother and son have been handed over to Porompat police station.
