Imphal, February 27 2011:
The proposed indefinite ceasework strike planned by teachers of 28 Government colleges of the State has been called off temporarily following an understanding between the Government and the Federation of College Teachers' Association, Manipur (FECTAM) .
With the cease-work strike scheduled to begin from February 28 now cancelled, FECTAM has appealed to students to attend classes regularly.
FECTAM has been demanding review of the Cabinet decision of November 4, 2010 which modified UGC Pay Scale and implementation of the National Policy on Higher Education in Manipur.
Pursuing these demands, college teachers under FECTAM, took mass casual leave on February 18 and 19 before staging sit-in-protest from 1 am to 2 pm in their respective colleges from February 21 to 26 .
Talking to reporters at Manipur Press Club about suspension of the proposed cease-work strike, FECTAM convenor M Lokendro said that FECTAM officials held a meeting with SPF spokesperson N Biren.
During the meeting, N Biren assured that the Government would look into the demands of FECTAM.
Following this assurance, FECTAM convened an emergency general council meeting and unanimously resolved to call off the proposed cease-work strike.
