Imphal, February 27 2011:
College teachers have called off their planned indefinite ceasework strike which was to commence Monday following an assurance from the government even as teachers of high and higher secondary education continue their stir.
The Federation of College Teachers' Association Manipur (FECTAM) today announced the suspension of all kinds of stirs including the sit-in protest in the college premises and a ceasework strike.
This was disclosed in a press conference held at Manipur Press Club, Imphal.
FECTAM convener, M Lokendro said that the decision to suspend all types of stir was taken following an assurance given by SPF spokesperson minister N Biren that government will consider their demands.
College teachers had already started staging sit-in protests and had warned of intensifying their protest if the government failed to consider their demands by February 28 .
The decisions of the college teachers have given a relief to the government which has been under pressure from the students of colleges but the government-school teachers impasse continues.
Teachers of government high and higher secondary schools are on a fast unto death for about a month.
More than 200 striking teachers have been put behind bars but the teachers as well as government have not budged their stands.
They will not retreat until their demands are fulfilled, said B Koireng, COTA co-convener speaking today to media persons.
