Under the theme of 'Youth for social transformation', the 22nd edition of the Manipur University Inter-College Youth Festival, 2008 has begun from today.
Being organised by the Manipur University, the inaugural function of the festival which would go on for three days was held at the centenary hall of the varsity here.
Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly Dr S Budhichandra Singh and Vice Chancellor of Manipur University Prof C Amuba Singh were respectively chief guest and president of the inaugural function which was also attended by Dean of Students' Welfare Prof Md Islamuddin and president of Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) Ksh Narayan as guests
of honour.
After inauguration of the festival formally through unfurling of the flag and lighting of the ceremonial lamp, the chief guest saluted the march past parade of the participating contingents from 22 different colleges affiliated to Manipur University.
The chief guest also released a souvenir to mark the occasion.
In his address, Dr Budhichandra said it should be the responsibility of everyone to guide the youth who are the future pillars of the society to the right direction.
In a pluralistic society like Manipur, it is imperative to organise such events where the youth can come together and understand each other.
This would help in cultivation of the feeling of oneness among them besides strengthening the bond of unity and sowing the seed of peace in the society, Dr Budhichandra said, while wishing success of the festival.
Delivering the presidential address, Vice Chancellor of Manipur University Prof C Amuba observed youths have a great responsibility towards building a Nation.
So apart from imparting knowledge and skill, it is essential to make each of the youth a responsible citizen of the society.
In continuation of the function, various competitive events for the participating colleges were conducted.
Science exhibition inaugurated: Being organised by the School Education Department, the 29th State Level Science Exhibition which would go on for three days has been inaugurated by the Commissioner of the Department Sambhu Singh from today at Bengali High School here.
The theme for the 22nd edition of the science exhibition is 'Science and Tech nology for Global Sensibility'.
Director of the Department M Harekrishna presided over the inaugural function.
In connection with the science exhibition, science Promotion Officer L Biramani said that exhibits and models of around 80 students selected from the district and zonal level competition are participating in the science exhibition.
From among the exhibits, students would be selected for participation as State representatives in the Eastern India Science Fair and National Exhibition.
During the course of the exhibition, a written quiz competition would also be arranged for selection of students for pursuing science study at the Bose Institute, Kolkata.
Speaking as chief guest of the inaugural function, Sambhu informed that four science teachers of the State would also be selected for special training at the Bose Institute, Kolkata.
As part of the exhibition, a seminar on the subject of 'Global warming' was held yesterday.
