Emphasising on the role of Shumang Leela (courtyard plays) in highlighting social problems, Revenue Minister Th Devendra said that this traditional art form should be promoted by the people.
Addressing as chief guest at the valedictory function of Ningtham Kumhei, 2004 organised by Manipur State Shumang leela Council at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Sanglen today, Devendra noted that this particular art form, apart from providing entertainment to the people, has great potential for opening the eyes of the Manipur people to various pressing social issues.
Stating the popularity of Shumang Leela is confined not only to the people of Manipur, Devendra said it has become a medium of art form which could introduce Manipur to the world.
He also gave his assurance of extending all possible help in promotion of the art form.
Art and Culture Minister Dr M Nara who presided over the function, also noted that Shumang Leela is gaining popularity in other parts of the world as well.
He informed that gathering that Ambassador of Belgium to India Patrick Butler has formally requested him for arranging performance Sanaleipak Nachom artistes' Lidiceegee Gulap at New Delhi in May next year to enable Ambassadors coming from different parts of the World to enjoy the play.
Invitation have also been received for showing Shumang Leela plays during the Cultural Festival proposed to be organised very soon at Gangtok and Kolkata by NEZCC, he further disclosed.
Another invitation for staging Manipuri Shumang leela play World Trade Centre at a festival to be organised by Prajanatya Mandali at Vishakhapatnam has also been received, he added.
Director of Art and Culture Dr Kh Sorojini, Bisheshor Sharma of State Kala Akademi and Narendra Ningomba, a chief functionary of Shumang leela Council were also among those who spoke at the occasion.
Prior to presentation of a Shumang Leela play titled �Nangna Luhongdringei� by the artistes of Sanaleipak Nachom, chief guest and president also felicitated Shumang Leela groups, Directors and playwrights who took part in the event with certificate of participation and certificate of honours.
Two women journalists, namely S Sonia of Poknapham and Nomita Khongbantabam of The Sangai Express were also honour with gifts by the chief guest and the president at the occasion.
