The Manipur drivers' Welfare Association has strongly condemned the assault of a driver and his assistant on the Imphal-Silchar (NH-53) route on October 3 besides creating fear psychosis among the passengers.
The drivers� body has also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister O ibobi Singh today demanding stringent punishment of the Assam Rifles personnel involved in assaulting the driver and his assistant without any reason.
The representation named the driver, who suffered serious injuries due to the AR thrashing as Heikrujam Ningthem s/o Angou of Moidangpok Maning Leikai.
The Association recalled that the incident took place at near Rengpang village located about 17 kms from Khongsang check post towards Imphal.
After detention at the check post for some minutes the loaded passenger bus was nearing Rengpang village when the Ar personnel in a Tata Sumo stopped the passenger bus coming from Silchar and began mercilessly assaulting the driver and the handyman, alleged the Association.
In addition to alleging that the passengers were also threatened by the security men without citing any reason the memorandum placed before the CM also charged the AR men of being in an inebriated condition when the incident occurred.
