Hockey player shot dead

Imphal, May 06 2023:
An inebriated man reportedly killed a National hockey player from Kongba Uchekon Khunuou last night at around 10.30 .
The deceased has been identified as Laishram Rivaldo (22), s/o Sanayaima and he was selected for Khelo India Youth Tournament while the accused has been identified as Nameirakpam Anilkumar alias Naocha (42), s/o Late Kanto who is a Forest Guard from the
same locality (Kongba Uchekon Khunou) .
It is reported that Anilkumar created a scene by firing some rounds using a double barrel shotgun in air.
He was drunk.
After hearing the gunshots, people in a large number assembled at Imoinu Keithel at Kongba Uchekon Khunou along Imphal-Yairipok road.
While the gathering was restive, Anilkumar approached Rivaldo and shot the latter from a short distance.
Rivaldo was then taken to JNIMS Hospital but he succumbed to pellet injuries sustained in head and chest.
Reportedly, Anilkumar fled after the incident while the gatherings searched for him.
Anilkumar surrendered before Porompat police station this morning.
It may be mentioned that a rumour of some armed people sneaking into different localities of the twin Imphal city sparked like a wildfire last night, compelling the localities to come out on streets.
A JAC has been formed against the killing of Rivaldo after convening a joint meeting of local clubs and meira paibi lups.
The JAC initially resolved to not claim the body until prompt action is taken up against Anilkumar.
The body was claimed after the Officer-in-charge of Irilbung police station reached an agreement with the JAC and the family members.
Speaking to the media, JAC chairman Seram Surjit Meetei appealed to the Government to carry out a thorough investigation before issuing a gun license.
After a post mortem at JNIMS, the mortal remains were taken at SYUC ground before performing the last rites.
