Imphal, February 19 2015:
A two-day National seminar on 'Culture and Society in North East' organised by Centre for Manipur Studies, Manipur University was set into motion today at MU Economics Department's lecture hall.
The inaugural session of the seminar was attended by Dr Arambam Lokendro Singh and CMS Director, Professor N Joykumar as chief guest and president respectively.
Professor Nabakumar and Prof MC Aruna delivered the keynote address.
Chief guest Dr Lokendro, in his speech, said tradition and society can never be set apart.
Every society has its own unique tradition.
While traditions are susceptible to change with the change of time, a society remains unmoved.
When imperialism spread its tentacles towards North East India, it shook the traditions of the indigenous people with its newness.
One must turn back to history books to fully understand the changes imperialism had brought to the society and its traditions, Dr Lokendro added.
CMS, Manipur holds such seminars every year at academic level to better understand a society, CMS Director Professor N Joykumar conveyed.
A total of 20 papers would be presented during the two-day seminar on the issue of society and its changing norms.
The first day of the seminar saw an elaborate discussion on the impact of globalization, cultures of NE India, the Look East Policy, tourism, herbal health care and status of men and women in the State.
