Imphal, December 18 2011:
Peeved over the permanent poor condition and slow repairing works along the Senapati-Mao route of the NH-2, the Senapati District Students' Association (SDSA) demanded satisfactory improvement within 10 days time from today, said a statement issued by the students' association.
Failure to positively respond within the stipulated time, the SDSA has decided to resort to PWD office and would also start immediate halt of road related works on NH-2 .
The SDSA further demanded the concerned contractors and PWD (Highway division), Senapati Hq to come out with necessary clarification on the present condition of the highway.
It is also maintained that since 2008, the SDSA has been persistently demanding for improvement of the then NH-39 now NH-2 through numerous memorandums, reminders, MoUs, total bandhs, economic blockade and public consultative meetings.
With no sight of relieve to the public even after sufficient funds were sanctioned by the Central Government, the SDSA has now decided to resume agitation against the department and concerned agency, it added.
The statement further alleged that the NH-2 since taking over by State PWD from BRO last year has not improved in any manner.
Many parts of the NH-2 especially in Chakumai Village areas, Makhan Village areas, Maram bazar to Center stretch and Khongnem to Senapati stretch areas remained worst hit by last year's and this year's monsoon season landslides.
With the Economic blockade lifted, regular commercial heavy trucks plying along the said portion has taken toll of the said highway.
Improper drainage system and retaining walls along the sinking areas, some portion of the road in Makhan areas are lying with boulders unfit for even small four wheelers to ply, added the statement.
