The Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Students' Union (IGNTUSU) shut down the University by locking all the department office, classes including the office chamber of Director, guest houses and the main entrance gate of the University in connection with the Government’s failure to meet its demands .
Expressing dissapointment at the non fulfilment of their earlier demands, the students’ body cancelled the classes of the new session which was scheduled to begin today .
The staff along with the students were compelled to leave the campus .
Speaking to media persons, general secretary of IGNTU-SU, Regional Campus Manipur, Jangminthang Haokip said, “We have highlighted our grievances to the authority concerned and placed our demands to be fulfilled before the new session begins .
“However, the authority concerned has failed to fulfill our demands which has compelled us to resort to extreme measures as warned earlier,” he added .
He further stated that even after authorities of IGNTU made several promises to provide facilities like hostel accommodation for the students and quarters for teaching and non-teaching staff, no initiative has been taken up till date .
He further stated that the newly appointed Director, Professor Ram Jeevan Singh had assured re-engagement of the guest faculties for the Department of Tribal Studies and Department of Sociology & Social Anthropology before the start of the new session but no steps have been taken up even till now .
Instead he published an interview schedule for the said faculties today .
Jangminthang Haokip also alleged that the disbursement of monthly stipends for students have been delayed for no valid reason .
He further said that until an amicable solution is reached, the University will remain locked and in case of any untoward incident the University authority will be held responsible, he added.
