NWU conducts training programme for leaders

Imphal, November 02 2014: Naga Women's Union (NWU) has conducted a training programme for community leaders on the 'Rights and Laws Related to Women' for the tribe units from October 25-27 at DSSS, Mantripukhri, Imphal.

NWU in a release said that everybody is aware that the upcoming trend of participation of women in every sphere of life is increasing, be it politics� the Parliament, State Assembly, Municipality Council, Panchayati Raj and socio-cultural activities.

It said people are becoming more aware of women's potentials and responsibilities in building the society and there is pressing need of their participation in the social services from top to the grassroot levels.

For, society is made of man and woman, by man and woman and for man and woman.

Women participation in the village authority councils which is the decision making body is essential for elevation of the social status of the village, developments and eradication of poverty in the land, the release said.

In this context, NWU conducted the training during which the women leaders were made aware on the rights and laws related to women by the resource persons.

A Noutuneshwari Devi, Chief Judicial Magistrate and Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Imphal East spoke on "Crime against Women and Its Legal Remedies"; Daniel Ramsan, Senior Advocate Manipur High Court, Imphal spoke on the topic "Civil and Political Rights (Article No 371c) and Village Authority Act and Women in Decision Making," while Adani, president, UNC spoke on "Socio-Economic and Political Situations of Nagas in Manipur and Women Participation in Society" .

Gaidon Kamei, secretary, UNC delivered on the topic "ADC Acts and Women in Decision Making Mechanisms;" Chingya Luithui, convener, NPMHR South Sector spoke on "Indigenous Peoples' Rights and Women" and M Ibohal Singh, (Manipur Judicial Services) Additional Judge, District and Session Judge, (Fast Track Court), Imphal West dwelt on "Rights of Women with Reference to Tribal Women of Manipur" during the programme.

A total of 30 women leaders participated in the programme and several questions were raised by them during the interaction and discussion hours.

One of the resource persons noted that the future is in the hands of women and that most of the existing Acts/Laws (Customary Laws) are all discriminatory to the tribal people especially women, adding the tribal customary law is not static but is changing and it should change for the better.

The resource persons said that women should not be suppressed for they have the right to come up with strength in the society.

They advocated the line that women should not wait for men to provide them a platform but take initiative to be rightfully placed in the decision making mechanisms as there is no legal obstacles.

Both men and women must exchange ideas and explore what is the best for the society and decide the future together, most of the resource persons said.
