Union fumes over 'illegal'toll tax collection; to cease passenger service

Angered by illegal collection of toll tax from passenger service vehicles at four different points along Mayai Lambi, Mayai Lambi Thongkhong Laksmi Bazar Drivers' cum Owners' Union has warned of ceasing passenger service along Mayai Lambi from November 7 if collection of illegal toll tax is not stopped before the said dateline.
Announcing this in a press meet here at Manipur Press Club, Huidrom Mangi, president of Mayai Lambi Thongkhong Laksmi Bazar Drivers cum Owners' Union demanded the concerned authorities who are collecting toll tax from the passenger service vehicles including the government to clarify whether collection of toll tax at four different points along the road is legitimate or not within November 7.He then cautioned passenger vehicles plying along the road of dire consequences if found plying along the road defying the call of the union.
Pointing out that toll tax is collected from passenger service vehicles at four different points between Wabgai and Imphal which is only 22-km distance, he charged that a sum of Rs 100 was collected from each of the passenger vehicle in the name of forming Mayai Lambi Joint Passenger Transport Committee which is yet to be constituted.
Owners of passenger service vehicles have repeatedly sought clarification over the matter but no positive response has been given by the concerned authorities till date, he rued.
Saying that the union was compelled to cease passenger service along Mayai Lambi as it left no option, he appealed to all concerned to extend co-operation to the call of the union.
