Imphal, May 31 2012:
A team of journalists from Bangladesh will soon arrive in the State to inspect the site selected for the controversial Tipaimukh Multipurpose Project.
The Government of India invited journalists from Bangladesh to visit the dam site after Bangladesh raised serious concerns about the possible impacts of Tipaimukh Dam which would be 390 metres long and 162.8 metres high, conveyed a source.
In response to the invitation, the Government of Bangladesh has initiated due procedures to select 10 journalists.
It is expected that the journalists team would arrive at Imphal in the first week of June.
In connection with the imminent visit of Bangladeshi journalists team, the Chief Secretary has convened a meeting with Power Department officials tomorrow.
Notably, Chief Minister O Ibobi and the Union Power Minister recently discussed threadbare on expediting the mega Tipaimukh project which would be taken up as a joint venture undertaking.
Apart from Bangladesh, many civil organisations have been vehemently protesting against Tipaimukh Project for the past many years.
Interestingly, Tipaimukh Project was already taken up as prior agenda during bilateral talks between India and Bangladesh and the Bangladeshi side was informed that the main purpose of Tipaimukh Dam is power generation.
