Imphal, July 06 2019:
Even though global climate change can be partially attributed for the drought like situation witnessed in the State, the barren hill ranges of the State are also contributing to the problem.
Talking to The Sangai Express, ICAR Imphal Joint Director I Meghachandra said that even as rain bearing clouds gather over the sky of Manipur, they cannot precipitate as many of the hill ranges are bare and barren.
I Meghachandra who is also Nodal Officer of the Agrometeorology Advisory Services said that rain bearing clouds could not cool down enough and precipitate but they are swept away by wind as many of the hill ranges in the State are bare and barren.

There was surplus pre-monsoon rainfall in Sikkim this season and the State is still experiencing rainfall at certain rate, Meghachandra said.
Warning that the whole State would face a very difficult situation if paddy seeds are not sown by July 15, he said that local paddy varieties may be cultivated even though it is late but cultivation of exotic paddy varieties which are not suitable to lower temperature would not bear fruits.
For the moment, paddy seeds can be sown on dry fields or fields with insufficient water and water may be diverted to these fields at the time of transplantation.
If this approach proves unsuccessful, stake holders should explore crops which can be cultivated during late Kharif season, he said.
Rainfall rate in the month of June this year declined by 41 per cent in the State, according to a report of the Indian Meteorology.
However, Directorate of Environment Deputy Director Dr T Brajakumar said that the State may also face devastating flood as there is a strong possibility of heavy rainfall in the coming months.
