Man accused of raping physically challenged woman

A 25-year old youth has reportedly raped a physically challenged woman.
The incident occurred on July 1 and the accused is said to be in the custody of Imphal West women PS .
Addressing media persons today at Manipur Press Club, elder brother of the victim woman said the rape took place on July 1 when the rapist took advantage of the absence of other family members of the victim.
He (victim's elder brother) is running a shop, his mother is a vendor while his father is an employee of the Power Department.
He caught the accused, their neighbour, red handed on July 1 when he returned home to have a meal in the evening.
The accused reportedly committed the crime upstairs.
When he confronted the accused identified as Chongtham Rojit alias Ronald (25) s/o Ch Radhakanta, the accused threatened to commit suicide with a knife.
The victim's brother however managed to snatch the knife and dragged him downstairs.
Later, the father of the accused was summoned when locals came to know about the incident.
The accused father assured to punish his son and disappeared.
When asked, the victim, who is disabled with hearing and speech impairment, told her mother through sign language that she was raped.
The accused was handed over to the Imphal West women PS the next day.
Medical examination of the girl was conducted on July 4 at RIMS while the accused was produced before the Court the same day under FIR No 36 (7) 2015 of Imphal West women PS under Section 6 of POCSO Act, 2012 .
He was remanded to police custody till July 10.A medical examination on the accused was conducted today at RIMS.
The victim's family today demanded justice in the case.
They also warned of launching different forms of agitation in collaboration with various bodies if the victim is denied justice.
