Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Andro today organised a one-day training programme on 'scientific wheat cultivation technology' at Central Agricultural University for the farmers of Imphal East district, whose paddy fields were affected by draught during kharif season this year.
KVK Andro Programme Co-ordinator Dr T Medhabati while briefing about the programme stated that the programme is a need-driven programme and follow-up action for technology back up to Kishan Gosthi on rabi crops for making up the loss of kharif crops this year.
Certified rabi crops like wheat, oilseed and pulses seeds were distributed to draught affected farmers by the office of Imphal East DC on October 28 and 29, she added.
Mentioning about the interaction of farmers and scientists during the gosthi of October 28, Medhabati said that farmers expressed interest of wheat cultivation on the available areas of draught affected areas.
Medhabati further said that with the continuous interaction of KVK scientific staff and the farmers and support of Imphal East DC, scientific plots of 13 hectares at Keirao/Andro circle and 3 hactares in Sawombung circle were identified for the purpose of scientific wheat technology demonstration to the wheat cultivators of the district from time to time.
In today's programme, Prof M Rohinikumar, Prof M Premjit, Prof L Nabachandra and Dr A Herojit of Central Agriculture University spoke on the topics like 'scope and importance of wheat cultivation in Manipur', 'insect pest and disease of wheat and their management', 'package and practices of scientific wheat cultivation technology' and 'soil and nutrient management in wheat cultivation'.
Thirty farmers who are cultivating wheat crop in the demonstration plots and also draught affected areas in the district took part in the programme.
Certified seeds of oilseeds, pulses and wheat were also distributed to farmers at the end of the programme.
