Under the motto of 'Women empowerment day', the second foundation day of Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) was celebrated at its Lamphelpat office complex here today.
Organised by the Commission, the celebration was attended by MLA of Khangabok, Okram Ongbi Landhoni Devi as chief guest, Chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Women Dr Ch Jamini Devi as functional president and Chairperson of Manipur Women's Development Corporation AK Mirabai as guest of honour.
In the welcome address, Member of Manipur State Commission for Women, Lhingjaneng Gangte stated that the Commission came into being under the leadership of SPF Government led by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh two years back and the Chief Minister's endorsement of women empowerment in the State has been the hallmark of the progress and development of the Commission.
Delivering the key note address, Dr Ch Jamini said the Commission was born two years back on December 12 and the day is being observed every year as the foundation day of the Commission.
So far, the Commission has made certain progress and development in its task.
Outlining the achievements of the Commission, she mentioned legal awareness programmes for women that have covered all the nine districts of the State, family counselling and education programmes for girls and adults have been conducted in different parts of the State and deliberation on the review of Prevention of Domestic Violence Act, 2005 .
In her address, Mirabai observed that the second anniversary of women empowerment has once again rejuvenated her conviction on the essence of being a woman as well as on protection of the dignity of woman through implementation of Acts like Prevention of Domestic Violence Act, 2005 .
The lone woman MLA of Manipur and better half of Chief Minister, Okram Ongbi Landhoni, who was the chief guest of the celebration, noted that women have always played a vital role in maintaining peace and harmony in the society.
