Imphal, October 09 2012:
Infrastructure inadequacy and nonadherence to prescribed norms by school authorities and department officials continue to crop up as Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) sustained its campaign of inspecting Government-run educational institutions.
As a part of the ongoing inspection drive, MSF volunteers accompanied by media persons today assessed condition of some Imphal East district schools, including Top Makha Primary School, Top Mayai Leikai Primary School, Khurai Heikru Makhong Junior High School, Khomidok Primary School, Tharo Primary School (Khurai Nandeibam Leikai) and top Bengool Primary Madrassa.
The common feature of today's inspection included not a single student present in some of the schools, absence of teachers in the classroom despite signing on the attendance register, non construction of kitchen sheds at primary level schools where mid-day meal scheme is being implemented, dilapidated condition or absolute absence of school boundary fencing and poorly maintained toilet facilities.
speaking to newspersons, MSF vice president Serajuddin lamented that Education Minister M Okendro's pledge to bring about positive change in the education sector within six months is turning out to mere lip-service.
While education sector continues to remain neglected, the only sign of change is in corruption and administrative mis-management, he said without elaborating on his contention.
Inspite of some noble schemes to provide free education, mid-day meal and uniform to the students, the fact that Government primary schools cannot attract sufficient number of students is a serious problem that needs to be redressed with urgency, suggested Serajuddin while pointing out ensuring regular attendance of teachers might encourage the students to attend classes.
Further stating that formulating a Government policy to monitor conduct and service dedication of teachers for at least 2/3 years before they are granted official post of teachers would bring about positive development in Government schools, he also sought the cooperation of local organisations in monitoring activities of the school concerned.
