As in other part of the world, International Literacy Day was observed in Manipur today.
The theme of this year's observance is 'One is not to old to learn something new'.
The main function of the observance was organized by State Directorate of Adult Education in collaboration with District Literacy Societies of Imphal East and Imphal West at GM Hall here.
The function was attended by Minister of Higher & Technical Education, School Education, Adult Education and SCERT Francis Ngajokpa as chief guest and Imphal East DC KK Chhetry, IAS as guest of honour and Commissioner (Adult Education) S Budhachandra Singh, IAS as president.
Those who spoke at the function stressed on the need to educate all the people.
Only then the State could move forward on the path of development and progress, they opined.
An extempore speech competition for teachers was also organized at the occasion.
The Department of Adult Education and Extension, Manipur University observed the XVIIIth observance of International Literacy Day today in the Lecture Hall of Political Science Department of the University.
To mark the occasion, a talks programme on 'Politics and Literacy' was organized.
Dean of School of Social Sciences, MU Prof Ksh Bimola Devi and Director of Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension, MU Dr Kh Gambhini Devi attended the function as chief guest and president.
While Dean of Humanities, MU Prof Devraj and Director of Centre of Manipur Studies and MU Prof N Joykumar Singh were guests of honour of the function.
Rendering of songs based on the theme of literacy, display of skit, entitled 'Lairik Heitabagi Dasha' by the University Students, etc, are some of the other highlight of the function.
The International Literacy Day, 2004 was also observed at the hall of Pujari High School, Khangabok in Thoubal District under the joint aegis of Project Officer, Adult Education.

The function was attended by MLA Dr M Nara Singh as chief guest.
He also announced the opening of the total literacy campaign in Thoubal district at the occasion.
At Moreh, the International Literacy Day was observed at Ima Keithel under the auspices of District Literacy Society, Chandel District.
A rally by school children was also taken out from Moreh Bazar to Gate No II Road via Prem Nagar morning market to mark and Community health centre the observance.
The International Literacy Day was also observed today at the Central Hall of WWAGS, Wangjing today.
The function was organized by Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS), Thoubal and attended by Ex-Minister Dr M Nara Singh and WWAGS secretary L Suva Kumar as chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
The International Literacy Day, 2004 was also observed at Chumang Youth Club in Chumaug village of Chandel district.
