Imphal, June 02 2014:
Kuki Students Organization, Gunpi Block (KSO-GB) has urged the Government of India and Government of Manipur to take up punitive actions against Sugnu Police SDPO and SI Charanjit for allegedly working in discriminatory manner.
Speaking to media persons at their Sugnu Tribal office today, KSO-GB vice-president Thangjalun Baite said that Sugnu is inhabited by Kukis, Nagas and Meiteis together but the two police officers cannot see all the communities with the same eyes.
To talk about the arrest of two students, three leaders of KSO-GB went to Sugnu police station last night.
But they were denied entry by the police personnel on sentry duty resulting in a heated altercation.
They came back and dialled SI Charanjit phone but it was not responded.
A few minutes later, SI Charanjit rang back saying that he was in their village.
Together with SI Charanjit, the three of them went to the police station for the second time.
As they sat down to talk with the SDPO, some police personnel started bashing them all over their bodies.
The student leaders were not allowed to speak even a single word when they assaulted mercilessly.
Later they were taken to Sugnu PHC and set free there after medical examination, Thangjalun Baite said.
The two students might have been arrested because of their misdeeds or faults.
Yet, KSO-GB thought that peaceful dialogue would be in the best interest of both the parties.
But the three functionaries were subjected to merciless physical assault.
Such conduct of the police personnel was highly condemnable.
Police should understand that students bodies are working for the welfare of public.
As such, there is always the need for cooperation between police and student bodies.
Thangjalun Baite went on to ask the motive of arresting people for consuming alcohol inside their villages while those openly drinking alcohol at Sugnu Bazar are not harmed.
Thangjalun Baite alleged that police behave in such manner which appeared to be communal in nature.
Moreover, they collect taxes for transporting animals/meat, ginger and vegetables.
Saying that the conduct of Sugnu police is unacceptable, KSO-GB demanded befitting action against the SDPO and the SI.
Thangjalun Baite said that they would be constrained to launch all sorts of agitation if their demand is not fulfilled at the earliest.
