HoDs/Deans endorse Oct 8 resolution of Academic Council

Giving another twist to the protracted reservation deadlock in admission to Manipur University, an emergency meeting of Heads of Departments and Deans has endorsed the resolution adopted by the University's Academic Council on October 8 .
Notably, the Academic Council meeting held on October 8 resolved that the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act 2006 should be followed in MU for the academic session 2016-17 .

According to this Act, there would be 15 per cent reservation for SC, 7.5 for ST and 27 per cent for OBC.
Briefing mediapersons after the emergency meeting held today, VC in-charge Prof Amar Yumnam said that the meeting was held to explore a way out and resume normal classes in Manipur.
The Academic Council is the highest body of the university.
A decision adopted by the Academic Council can be changed or modified only by the President of India, he asserted.
He said that all admission process would be finalised by October 29 and normal classes will be resumed from October 31 .
The reservation policy chosen by the Academic Council meeting on October 8 will be followed in MU for the academic session 2016-17.As for the coming years, an expert committee would be constituted to explore a reservation policy which would be best suited to MU, Prof Amar Yumnam said.
He remarked that there are certain vague or ambiguous areas in the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Amendment Act 2012 .
The Academic Council need to debate these areas in the context of Manipur.
A report submitted by the expert committee would be sent to the Ministry of Human Resource Development and UGC.
Manipur University would certainly adopt a concrete reservation policy before commencement of the next academic session 2017-18, Prof Amar Yumnam added.
Meanwhile, the JAC Against Implementation of State Reservation Policy in Admission in Manipur University has hailed the decision adopted at the meeting of HoDs and Deans today.
Subsequent upon the decision, the JAC has suspended its relay hunger strike apart from withdrawing the call for total shut down of MU.
