Defeating his only rival Hemam Bira Singh of MPP in a straight fight by a margin of 4,887 votes, Indian National Congress candidate Mairenbam Prithiviraj has won the by-election to the Moirang Assembly Constituency, and in the process becoming the youngest MLA in the 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly.

Son of former Congress MLA Mairembam Manindra whose sudden demise has necessitated the conduct of the by-election, Prithiviraj is just 30 years old and is still a bachelor. In the counting of the votes held at the office complex of Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur district since 8 am today, Prithiviraj secured a total of 16,225 votes while his rival Hemam Bira Singh could get only 11,338 votes, thus coming in the second position.
Inclusive of this bye-election, it is for the fourth time that Bira Singh has been relegated to the position of second best in his political career of contesting in the election.
Out of the total 37 polling stations of the by-election, the Congress candidate took the lead in 33 polling stations while the MPP candidates in only four polling stations.
Even in the home polling station of the MPP candidate in 27/11-Moirang Multipur-pose Higher Secondary School, Western wing, the Congress candidate fared better securing 560 votes as against 472 votes of the MPP candidates.
With the success in his first foray into politics, Prithiviraj, who is a 30-year old bachelor, has become the youngest MLA in the 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly.
He was born on November 20, 1978 at Moirang Kiyam Leikai.
He is the son of late Mairembam Manindra, who was an MLA of Moirang Assembly segment.
Prithiviraj is the second person who succeeded in the by-election from their respective Assembly segment held after the demise of their fathers.
In the by-election held after the death of Th Nabakumar, who was the elected MLA from Khundrakpam Assembly Constituency, his son Th Lokeshore retained the seat of his father.
After clearing his HSLC examination in first division from Moirang Multipurpose Higher Secondary School in 1995, Prithiviraj did his MBA in Human Resources from Mysore University.
Apart from contributing his mite in various fields, he has also been actively involving in social activities.
Growing up in a family of political background with strong faith in the Congress party, he had also played many major roles in the election campaign of the party in the State Assembly election.
