Assam Rifles and Rip Trip jointly organise Mukna Challenge in Andro

Keithelmanbi Battalion of 9 Sector under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) along with Rip Trip NGO organised Mukna Challenge at Andro village on September 29.Keeping up with the Manipuri traditions, Andro Company Operating Base (COB) of Keithelmanbi Battalion in association with Rip Trip NGO organised the event for the locals in and around Andro village.
Mukna is a form of folk wrestling in Manipur.
It is popular especially in Imphal, Thoubal and Bishnupur areas of the State.
The game is generally played on the last day of the 'Lai Haraoba Festival' and is an intrinsic part of the ceremonial functions.
Matches begin with the competitors holding each other's belts called Ningri.
Mukna contains many techniques (lou) which require absolute physical fitness and skill to be mastered.
The event commenced with the inauguration of Andro community based tourism huts followed by a cultural programme wherein locals showcased rich Manipuri cultural heritage.
The locals of the area participated in the Mukna challenge with great zeal and enthusiasm.
The event was graced by Lt Gen Konsom Himalaya Singh (Retd) and W Ibohal, Director of Manipur Tourism.
The local populace was overwhelmed to see their indigenous sports being revived and being participated very enthusiastically.
The event witnessed attendance by over 1500 locals of the area.
The event was conducted in true Manipuri tradition, said a press release of IGAR (S).
The villagers appreciated the gesture of the Assam Rifles in reaching out to them and hoped that this effort would go a long way in further cementing the bond between the people of Manipur and the forces as well as reaffirming the faith of the people in the Assam Rifles as "Friends of Manipur ", the release continued.
