Mother-child drown

A 32-year-old woman and her 9-year-old daughter drowned as she tried to rescue her drowning daughter while washing clothes in Zil River in Lhungtin sub division under Saikul AC of Kangpokpi district on Tuesday afternoon, reports our correspondent.
The deceased have been identified as Chali Maya Khadka (32) w/o Man Bahadur (Mune) Khadka and her daughter Monika Khadka (9) of K Phaipijang village near Molkon bazar.
The unfortunate incident occurred at around 2.30 pm on July 10 when the mother and daughter were washing clothes near the river and the nine year old child slipped into the river and drowned.
In an attempt to rescue her daughter the mother also drowned in the river.
Following the urgent distress call of CSOs of Saikul, local people including few local divers immediately swung into action to save the mother-daughter but they were untraceable till night.
The monsoon rain unfortunately poured down incessantly later in the evening only to increase the water level of Zil river giving a hard time to the search party the next day.
However, despite various hurdles the search team finally found the lifeless body of the mother below Makokching suspension bridge yesterday afternoon at around 2.55 pm.
Saikul CSOs reported the death of Chali Maya Khadka to Saikul police station while recovering the lifeless body of the brave mother whose cremation ceremony was conducted later in the afternoon in the presence of her husband and two other children at K Phaipijang village after it was brought from Saikul by Saikul police.
The yet to trace 9-year-old girl Monika Khadka was a student of Class III at LM Model English School, Molkon while her siblings study in Class I and KG in the same school.
Meanwhile, CSOs of Saikul under the aegis of Kuki Inpi Saikul Gamkai have appealed everyone more particularly those residing along Zil river till Imphal to help the family find their daughter in all possible means while urging the department concerned and State Government to compensate the huge and irreparable loss of Man Bahadur (Mune) Khadka and his family.
