Plastic bags banned following vast littering

Following to the order issued by Manipur High Court, the Ukhrul Autonomous District Council (UADC) has banned selling and using of polythene bags /polythene below the thickness of 50 microns in the Ukhrul District with immediate effect.
The banning of plastic bags came into force in compliance to the order of Manipur High Court on May 21 this year, directing the Autonomous District Councils to take up necessary action against the rampant use of plastic carry bags in all the districts of Manipur.
CEO ADC, Ukhrul Polly Makan in a brief interaction with our correspondent, expressed that an executive committee meeting was held and deliberated on plastic waste management.
The meeting also resolved to prohibit selling and using of poly bags/polythene below the thickness of 50 microns within the jurisdiction of Ukhrul District Autonomous Council.
She added that selling of beef has also been banned in Ukhrul district for time being /temporary until further notice from the authorities, as a safety measures to the outbreak of cattle epidemic in the district.
Polly went on to say that the people of Ukhrul lack proper knowledge on waste management and the environmental and health hazards caused by plastic wastes.
As a result, she said, people start littering or dumping waste everywhere.
Dumping of wastes has to be taken care off, proper management and scientific disposal would be followed to be a free environmental-hazard district.
ADC, Ukhrul has plan to organize more awareness programme to highlight the strict guidelines imposed for violators.
She said, as per environment protection Act, 1986 any person found dealing /selling /throwing plastic waste below the thickness of 50 microns will be held responsible to punishment with imprisonment and fine or both.
