Cong pays tributes to Rishang Keishing

The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) observed the 10th death anniversary of former Chief Minister Rishang Keishing at Congress Bhavan, BT Road, today.
During the observance, former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, along with party MLAs and office-bearers, paid floral tributes to the portrait of Rishang Keishing.
The observance was also attended by Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader K Meghachandra, MLA Okram Surjakumar, ex MP T Meinya, Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Gaikhangam, ex Ministers M Hemantakumar, M Okendro, Dr Kh Loken, ex MLAs Victor Keishing, Md Amin Shah, Fajur Rahim and P Sharatchadra among others.
Addressing the function, Ibobi, who is the MPCC president, appealed to all communities in Manipur to uphold the ideals and philosophy of Rishang Keishing, who stood firmly for the territorial and emotional integrity of the State.
He also stated that Rishang Keishing's contributions to the State and the country throughout his lifetime were immense and would always be remembered.
Fondly referred to as "Oja", Rishang Keishing was a leader who worked tirelessly for the development and peace of both the hill and valley districts of Manipur, he added.
Ibobi further stated that Rishang Keishing was the first Member of Parliament from Manipur, serving twice in the Lok Sabha and twice in the Rajya Sabha.
Rishang Keishing, who served as the Chief Minister of Manipur four times, was a calm and resilient leader who worked tirelessly to ensure equal development in the hill and valley districts of the State, Ibobi added.
He also said that Rishang Keishing played a key role in resolving the Naga-Kuki clashes in the 1990s .
Unfortunately, the mortal remains of the former Chief Minister could not be buried at his birthplace, Phungyar in Ukhrul district, due to opposition from certain sections of people who opposed the principle of Manipur's unity, he added.
