Manipur situation causing mental illness: RIMS professor

There should be concerted effort from all sections of the society to ensure sound mental health of the people even though various issues gripping Manipur is not helpful to the cause, said Head of Psychiatry Department RIMS Prof N Heramani.
speaking as a guest of honour at the observance of World Mental Health Day at Nupi Lan complex today, Dr Heramani said apart from domestic issues causing mental disturbances to an individual situation prevailing in a society is an importance factor for mental instability.
With violence of different types occurring in the State on a regular basis it is understandable that there are many individuals suffering from some sort of mental instability, he observed while adding that treating mental illness is a time consuming process and necessitates involvement of not only the professionals but also requires contribution and care from the family members.
The observance function organised jointly by the State Health Department, Manipur State Mental Health Authority and Indian Psychiatric Society, Manipur Branch was inaugurated by the Health Minister L Jayantakumar Singh as the chief guest.
Additional Director (Health Services) Sh Surchandra, Additional Director (Family Welfare) L Surchandra, Clinical Psychologist (Retd) Prof M Akshaykumar and State Leprosy Officer (Retd) Dr L Shantikumar were also present at the occasion.
