Imphal, October 10 2011:
Taking strong exception to the reported statement of the Chief Minister, candidate aspirant in Thoubal Assembly Constituency, Oinam Indira Devi has asserted that members of the Opposition in the Assembly are also elected representatives and have the interest of the public in mind.
Indira said this in response to the statement of the Chief Minister who took a dig at the Opposition MLAs during the inaugural function of Imoinu Market and foundation stone laying ceremony of a hospital at Mayang Imphal, Imphal West.
The Chief Minister is reported to have told the gathering that Opposition MLAs can do nothing for the people and topped this off by asserting that the (Opposition MLAs) are only entitled to some Travel Allowance and Dearness Allowance.
Speaking to newsmen at the Manipur Press Club today, Indira said that the coming election is the right opportunity to teach such arrogance a fitting lesson.
Asserting that she has the whole hearted support of the people, Indira said that it was this support which enabled to hold a meeting at Irong today.
"IRB and VDF personnel tried to stop me from holding the meeting but the sheer presence of the public made them retreat," said Indira.
The Irong meeting was held after a similar campaign at Thoubal Thoudam.
The futile attempt to thwart the meeting at Iron was the handiwork of the Chief Minister and his supporters, she said and added that such undemocratic exercise calls for the imposition of President's Rule.
The matter will be discussed with other political parties, she added.
Indira also held the Chief Minister responsible for the utter failure to open the highways, which has been cut off for more than 60 days which has led to acute sufferings of the people.
