Imphal, April 29 2021: Malom in Imphal West district may plunge into a catastrophic situation on account of the COVID-19 pandemic if immediate containment measures like opening of community quarantine centres, contact tracing and other necessary steps are not taken up.

Speaking to media persons at Megha High School today, Youth Welfare Club (YWC), Malom president Kangjam Ranjit said that 32 residents of Malom Tuliyaima Mayai Leikai were tested COVID-19 positive from April 24 till April 28 .

11 persons were tested positive on April 24 and 25 followed by 21 others on April 28 .

Except for one whose condition is somewhat serious, all the other positive people are currently under home isolation.

Imphal West District Magistrate has already declared 15 households as containment zones.

Some families have three/four COVID-19 positive members, Ranjit said.

Many of these households have only one common bathroom and toilet each and considering the proximity of neighbouring houses, there is a strong possibility of COVID-19 spreading to every family in the locality, he said.

Taking serious note of the unfolding situation, Malom Gram Panchayat, YWC and Malom Tuliyaima Lai Pakhangba Seva Committee held a joint meeting and appealed to the Imphal West DC through telephone to give permission for opening a community quarantine centre, Ranjit said.

Even as a proposal was submitted to open a community quarantine centre at Malom Megha High School for which all the expenses and manpower would be provided by the local people, the DC replied that the Government's approval is necessary for opening any community quarantine centre.

Moreover, the worried people have no one to seek help from as the Naoriya Pakhanglakpa AC is currently vacant.

The local club president then urged the Chief Minister who is also in charge of Health Department to give them due permission for opening a community quarantine centre in addition to taking up necessary containment measures like tracing contacts.

If necessary containment measures are not taken up urgently, Malom may become a COVID-19 hotspot, he warned.

At present, CMO Imphal West has been providing medicines to the people under home isolation while Bishnupur SP sent police teams to isolate the containment zones.

For their support and service, the YWC president conveyed gratitude to the CMO and the SP .
