Pravish Chanam case : PAC warns of 24 hours total shutdown from midnight of February 28

Imphal, February 23 2019: With no sign of a breakthrough even after one and a half year since the mysterious death of Pravish Chanam in Greater Noida, the People Action Committee Against the Brutal Killing of Pravish Chanam has warned the State Government of a 24 hours total shutdown from midnight of February 28.The shutdown will be imposed if the case of Pravish Chanam is not discussed in the ongoing Assembly session on or before February 28, said Laimayum Pishu Sharma, convenor of the People Action Committee Against the Brutal Killing of Pravish Chanam of Uripok Achom Leikai at Greater Noida today.

The State Government and authorities concerned have utterly failed to crack the case and deliver justice, said L Pishu speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club, Imphal today.

It may be recalled that Pravish Chanam (22) had gone missing after attending concert in Noida on the night of September 8, 2017.His body was later recovered from Nithari village the next day.

Chanam had, however, been admitted to the district hospital after he had passed out at the concert venue.

But CCTV footage showed that he slipped out of the hospital at 6 am the next morning.

His body was found near the hospital in Nithari area and police cremated the body on September 10 without informing his parents.

Despite the assurance of a CBI probe, the case has been in the cold storage for long, said L Pishu appealing the State Government and authorities concerned to speedily solve the case.

After a general strike was called on November 18, 2018 by the People Action Committee (PAC), CSOs and student organisations, the Chief Minister had invited the People Action Committee regarding the matter.

And subsequently, PAC met the CM on November 20 wherein CM's Secretary gave the PAC a 7 points letter asking them to call off the general strike for 20 days, Pishu said.

However, the commitment given to them has not been turned into action, he said condemning the State Government for its 'negligence' in solving the case.

The 'failure' of the State Government and the Chief Minister to effectively pressure the Uttar Pradesh Government and the Centre in the case is a matter of great concern and this shows the State Government's weakness, he said.

Stating that the PAC is planning to hold a people's convention on the issue with CSOs and student organisations, the PAC convenor urged the State Government to take the case seriously.

AMKIL vice president Lourembam Nganbi, who was also at the press meet, condemned the State Government for its 'failure' in solving the case and questioned why the case has been 'neglected' for so long.

"When Modi and the Modi/State Government are criticised and condemned, the State Government almost immediately nabs the alleged perpetrators.

How is the Pravish Chanam's case taking so long to crack?" she questioned reminding the Government to convert its promises and commitments into action at the earliest.
