Census more than a head count : Ukhrul DC

Imphal, February 09, 2011: The second phase of of the Census operation 2011 kick-started with Deputy Commissioner N Ashok Kumar, IAS, being the first person to be enumerated in Ukhrul district by enumerator, Mr MJ Joseph, teacher of KK Leishiphanit Jr.

High School, here today.

The focus of the decadal head count is no doubt correct data and inputs and notably there was an air of enthusiasm and spontaneity when the Census exercise started today.

Underlining the importance of the Census in planning and development of the country, the Deputy Commissioner informed that around five hundred Government employees would be involved in the exercise in all the villages of the Ukhrul district from February 09 to 28, 2011. It is noteworthy that an exhibition football match organised by Ukhrul District Sports Association and sponsored by the Directorate of Census Operations, Manipur was held in the Long ground, Ukhrul district headquarters on February 08, 2011 to create public awareness about the Census and its importance.

The data collected is vital for effective planning and hence the need for not only accurate but also informative data that can be used for planning, development and other purposes and therefore is not merely a head-count of the people.

There is a veritable treasure house of information on demography, fertility and morality and , hence the census officers also appeals all the denizens to join hands and ensure the success of the district census operation.

The hall mark of Census 2011 exercise is the preparation of National Population Register (NPR), under which the primary data of every villages besides,each and every resident of the country would be issued an identity card containing a unique identity number, photograph, fingerprints and iris imaging.

The Deputy Commissioner who is also the Principal Census officer of Ukhrul District exhorted one and all to co-operate in the Census 2011 exercise, summarizing it nicely � "Counting on everyone, so that everyone gets counted" which will be one of the major valuable information for planning and formulation of policies, effective public administration which may be avail widely by the national and national agencies/NGOs, and many more.
