Imphal, November 22 2014 :
Thickets and groves of bushes and shrubs which grow at blind or sharp turnings along Imphal-Dimapur between Senapati and Lairou were cleared by transporters today.
Members of the Senapati District Drivers' Welfare Union and the Surface Transport Hill Area Drivers' Welfare Union jointly cleared the thickets and groves with a view to avoid road accidents at these vulnerable spots.
Members of the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' and Motor Workers' Union also took part in clearing the thickets and groves.
Talking about the exercise, Surface Transport Hill Area Drivers Welfare Union general secretary Kapani Kajuna said that these thickets block the view of drivers whose sight is considerably reduced due to cloudy or foggy weather condition during winter season.

This reduced visibility often result in disastrous accidents.
It was with a view to reduce these cases of road accidents that the thickets and groves growing at blind or sharp turnings were cleared, Kapani said.
More than 20 cases of road mishaps took place along the highway section during the current month.
Senapati District Drivers' Welfare Union president Athikho Ranbir said that presence of many speed breakers along the highway between Senapati and Maram cause much inconvenience to transporters.
Asking who put up the speed breakers with whose permission, Athikho sought immediate attention of the Government and removal of the same speed breakers at the earliest.
Even as repairing work has been initiated on Senapati -Lairou section, Lairou-Mao section still remains unattended, said All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' and Motor Workers' Union secretary Naorem Dillip.
He urged the Government to repair the same section with due emphasis on the qualitative aspect as soon as possible.
