Imphal, January 07 2015:
The Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Students' Union-Regional Campus Manipur (IGNTUSU-RCM) on Wednesday threatened to launch a fast-unto-death agitation over the Manipur Government's inability to complete the on-going infrastructure development work on the varsity campus, reports NNN.
"We've decided to embark a fast-unto-death agitation beginning January 15," IGNTUSU-RCM president K Bowang Kho announced while talking to Newmai News Network.
He urged the State Government to complete the construction of approach roads, electrification and other development works taken up on the main varsity campus quickly.
The construction of main buildings for the main campus of IGNTU-RCM at Makhan in Senapati district has already completed, but development of hostels, buildings to accommodate students, staff, faculty and many other members are yet to be started.
At the moment, the union's immediate demands are water supply, approach roads and electricity so the varsity can start functioning soon.
The union held a meeting at the varsity's temporary campus, Adimjati Complex here on Tuesday.
At the meeting, the union decided to take up the fast-unto-death agitation over the demand.
It decided to seek tribal MLAs' intervention to ensure that the infrastructure work is completed expeditiously, Bowang Kho said.
The meeting further decided that the union would seek help and support from other tribal student bodies of the State to fulfil the demands, he added.
It also decided to take up other long-pending issues like recognition of IGNTU-RCM as an autonomous Central University independent from IGNTU, Amarkantak, reservation in recruiting teaching and non-teaching staff and admission of students, and appointment of a full-time Director for the varsity, he added.
