Plans to check road mishaps kick off

The State Government has taken up certain measures with the primary objective of reducing road accidents as far as possible after identifying accident prone areas of Imphal city and surrounding areas.
The Supreme Court has already issued a directive to enhance safety facilities on all roads so that road accidents, both fatal and non-fatal, are minimized, informed a source from the Transport Department.
A committee headed by retired Justice KS Radhakrishan has also been constituted at the instructions of the apex Court.
The committee has already started its designated tasks in consultation with State Governments and Governments of Union Territories.
The committee held a meeting on December 10 last year and it deliberated on road safety.
The State Government was represented by Transport Deputy Director BK Sharma, PWD Additional Chief Engineer-II Kh Temba and Imphal West DSP (Traffic) Haobam Sanganita.
Subsequent upon the meeting, a sub-committee on black spot was constituted with Transport Secretary as chairman, Transport Director as member, PWD Additional Chief Engineer (Roads and Bridges) as member secretary, Imphal West Addl SP (Traffic) and Deputy Director of Transport (Planning) as members.
The sub-committee went around Imphal city today and made an assessment of the roads and their sections which are believed to be accident prone.
The sub-committee would submit a detailed report to the high level committee headed by the Chief Secretary as chairman with recommendations for enhancing safety infrastructure and facilities at the accident prone areas, informed the source.
