Jiribam, May 02 2024:
The recently constructed culvert along the Jiri-Tipaimukh (JT) Road met a disastrous fate on Wednesday as it was swept away by heavy rainfall, effectively severing the connection between Borobekra sub-division and Jiri town.
Located approximately 7 kilometres southeast of Jiri town, just across the entrance of Jiri tea estate, the culvert constructed over a stream crumbled under the pressure of the strong water current, with a section of approximately 15 feet collapsing entirely.
The road, crucial for transportation between Borobekra sub-division and Jiri town, now stands impassable due to the large gap caused by the collapsed culvert.
Construction workers involved in the project revealed that this was not the first time the culvert had fallen victim to nature's fury.
In the past, it had been swept away by the strong current of the water flow, despite efforts to reinforce it.
Despite reinforcing the structure with a round ring, it proved insufficient to withstand the powerful current generated by the heavy rainfall.
Construction workers intend to strengthen the culvert with a square ring reinforcement and reconstruct it from scratch to ensure its durability and resilience against future natural calamities, once weather conditions improve.
In the meantime, the inhabitants of Borobekra sub-division are facing considerable inconvenience and disruption to their daily lives.
They called upon the authorities to devise alternative means of transportation to alleviate their predicament and restore connectivity between the sub-division and Jiri town.
