Imphal, January 23 2024:
Senior Citizens' Club has submitted a memorandum to chief minister N Biren urging the latter to strengthen the state forces.
In the memorandum, the Forum pointed out that Moreh is not only an indispensable part for Manipur but also of great importance to India in terms of strategic and economic interests.
A stable Moreh is the key to the success of Natiop's Act East Policy, it added.
Stating that Manipur police in Moreh should be adequately reinforced, the memorandum said that since future recurrence of violence cannot be ruled out and sending troops entail elaborate administrative as well as operational arrangements, a substantial number of troops capable of sustaining itself must be sent.
One battalion of the state's armed police should be deployed at Moreh, it emphasised.
The memorandum further suggested reducing the number of security guards detailed as security escorts of ministers and MLAs; manpower auditing to identify personnel absent for their place of duty without leave authorisation; making traffic police personnel combat-ready as they have undergone the same basic training as the police; and reviewing of weapon authorisation of police.
As a special case, provision and use of weapons such as automatic grenade launchers, rocket launchers, MMGs, etc., may be authorised, it added.
Lastly, it suggested that appropriate action be initiated to make the central security forces presently deployed in the state act proactively.
