Imphal, February 10 2024:
COCOMI Farmers' Wing (CFW) said that the planned protest of farmers, who are demanding compensation for crisis affected farmlands, has been suspended for the time being following the cabinet decision to compensate the affected farmers.
Addressing a press meet at COCOMI office here on Saturday, CFW convenor K Thoiba said that the farmers have been demanding the government to compensate the farmers, who could not cultivate crops in their farmlands due to the crisis.
CFW had submitted memorandum to the government for releasing the compensation at the earliest so that the farmers could buy stocks of paddy and pay their landlords in time.
CFW also raised the demands for taking up welfare initiatives for farmers including alternative crops to address crop failure, facilitation of double cropping, and releasing funds for boring tube wells and farm machineries.
The state cabinet meeting held on Friday had approved Rs 18.9 crore fund for compensating 3483 farmers in the first phase.
Welcoming the cabinet decision, CFW has decided to suspend its proposed stir for the time being, he said and added that they will resume the stir if the government fails to release the fund in time.
