Imphal, April 03 2017:
Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (CAF & PD) Minister Karam Shyam and Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD) Minister Letpao Haokip today inspected flood affected areas in Langthabal AC and Manipur Univsersity campus.
The Ministers were accompanied by officials of the State Government and Manipur University.
Speaking to mediapersons, Karam Shyam said, "The incessant downpour has flooded many places across the State.
One of the main causes of flood is lack of proper drainage system.
Dumping of solid waste into the drain will block the flow of water which in turn will cause flood."

He also noted that a particular canal connecting Langthabal and Singjamei which is also a meeting point of all the water which flow down from the surrounding areas has been encroached upon by some people while constructing toilets and kitchens.
As such, drain water can no longer flow through easily.
Drain water from Singjamei, Kakwa, Waikhom Leikai, Sorokhaibam Leikai, Maibam Leikai and other areas flow through the administrative block of Manipur University where a dam is being constructed for water preservation.
Since the said dam is being blocked, drain water cannot flow through.
This is also one of the causes of flood in the area, the Minister said.
Taking serious note of the adverse impact of the dam, engineers and State officials have recommended removal of the dam.
The State Government will soon initiate necessary steps to remove the dam, he said.
"However, one must not forget the fact that people have been constructing houses without setting up a proper drainage system.
This causes water to remain stagnant," he added.
IFCD Minister Letpao Haokip solicited the cooperation of all concerned in order to ease the hardship faced by people of the area due to man-made factors.
He also urged all concerned not to put up illegal structures along the river/waterway that could block the free passage of water.
