Hand over Koirengei airfield: CM to PM

Pointing out that Manipuri people took active roles in the freedom struggle of India, Chief Minister N Biren has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hand over Koirengei airfield to the State Government.
The Chief Minister wrote a letter to the Prime Minister to this effect on March 27.Biren pointed out that the Koirengei airfield was a major point for supply and reinforcement of British and allied forces during the Battle of Imphal (1944) in WWII .
Informing that the area is presently under occupation of the Defence Ministry, the Chief Minister appealed to the Prime Minister to hand over the same airfield to the State Government in order to develop it as a historical place.
The Indian National flag was first hoisted by INA's Netaji Subash Chandra Bose at Moirang, Manipur on April 14, 1944 .
There is also an INA memorial complex at Moirang which stands as a testimony of Manipuri people's active participation in the country's freedom struggle, mentioned the Chief Minister's letter.
Pointing out that many freedom fighters were exiled/imprisoned in Andaman and Nicobar Island, N Biren expressed keen desire to build a memorial complex at the island under the Prime Minister's Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat scheme.
