Uripok shooting: Sit-in demands arrest of culprits

Imphal, October 23 2023: Cultural Development Society arid Uripok Apunba Nupi Lup jointly organised a sit-in protest at Uripok Sorbon Thingel Leirak Machin on Monday, demanding immediate arrest of the culprit(s) involved in the life attempt on Ahanthem Ritesh Kumar at Uripok Khoisnam Leikai on October 20 .

During the sit-in, the protestors held placards inscribed with slogans like 'No cover up for culprits', 'Award befitting punishment', 'Guns are meant for war', 'Using guns in residential areas not bravery' , 'Don't hold guns without knowing its meaning', 'Guns for braves not for timid' and 'Punish accomplices of main accused as well'.

Speaking on the sidelines, the victim's mother Ahanthem Rita recounted that on October 20 around 10.30 pm one Thokchom Yaikhomba (20) s/o Yaima of Uripok Khoisnam Leikai called her son and lured him (Ritesh) from home.

After sometime, she called her son, who conveyed that he would return home soon.

At about 11.25pm, Yaikhomba's mother Pramo called Ritesh's elder brother Malemnganba and told him to come to their house.

When Malemnganba arrived, Pramo informed that she heard a gunshot on the terrace of their house and asked him to go up there.

Malemnganba went up to the terrace and found Ritesh lying with a gunshot wound on his head.

Yaikhomba's family did not provide details of how the incident occurred.

Meanwhile, Ritesh is currently admitted in the ICU of Raj Medicity, Rita conveyed.

Demanding arrest and strict punishment of all those involved in the incident, Rita said that the incident cannot be swept under the rug with just Deepu's arrest.

The incident occurred at Yaikhomba's residence and he (Yaikhomba) was the one who called out her son.

As such, Yaikhomba should also be arrested and the gun used in the incident recovered, she demanded.

On the other hand, Imphal PS had registered a case in this regard and arrested Takhellambam Deepu Singh (25) s/o (L) Bijoy at Uripok Polem Leikai.

He was produced before the court on Sunday, which remanded him to police custody for 10 days.
