Imphal, April 27 2025:
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the state and other parts of Northeast over the next five days.
In its weather bulletin issued Saturday, IMD said gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are likely to affect the region during this period.
Specifically for Manipur, heavy rainfall is likely on both April 27 and 28, along with Nagaland, Mizoram, and Tripura.
On April 28, isolated places in the state, along with Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tripura, are also expected to witness heavy rain.
The bulletin further stated that on April 29, thunderstorms with gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph are very likely at isolated places over Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tripura.
On April 30, similar conditions with slightly lower wind speeds of 30 to 40 kmph are likely to continue in the state.
On May 1, thunderstorms and lightning are likely to occur at isolated places across Assam and Meghalaya, as well as Nagaland, Manipur, and Tripura.
Regarding the potential impact of the heavy rainfall forecast for April 27 and 28, IMD has warned of localised flooding of roads, water logging in low-lying areas, and closure of underpasses, mainly in urban regions.
Occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall and disruption of traffic in major cities leading to increased travel time are also expected.
Minor damage to kutcha roads and possibilities of damage to vulnerable structures have been highlighted.
Localised landslides or mudslides may occur, and there could be damage to horticulture and standing crops due to inundation.
The department also cautioned that the situation could lead to riverine flooding in some river catchments.
