Convention opposes extension of Loktak project

A public convention held at Ithai Wapokpi public ground on Sunday has resolved to oppose extension of Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Project for 25 years as proposed by National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).
The convention organised by People's Committee on Restoration of Loktak and Its Associated Wetlands Manipur on the topic 'Impact of Loktak Hydroelectric Project in Manipur' was attended by writer Ranjit Ningthouja, environmental journalist Rajesh Salam, Indian Bird Conservation Network, Manipur co-ordinator RK Birjit and Kumbi College retired principal K Jugeshwor as resource persons.
Noting that Loktak Project since its inception has hugely impacted not only the wealth and property of people but also damaged the environment while benefits assured to the project-affected people remain unfulfilled till date, the public meeting resolved to oppose the proposed plan to extend the functioning of the project by 25 years along with demanding review of Loktak Protection Act, 2006.The meet also resolved that Loktak Development Authority (LDA), Forest Department, Directorate of Environmental and Climate Change, other department concerned and state government should provide detailed information to the public for their decision regarding proposed extension of Loktak Project.
Those gathered also proposed expansion of executive committee of the People's Committee to make it state level body and demand NHPC to compensate for the damage caused to wealth and property of public.
The meet also agreed to submit the resolution passed with to the Loktak Project at the meeting in the form of a memorandum to departments concerned.
At the end of the meet, the attendees chanted slogans like 'Save Loktak lake'; 'Loktak is our soul, without it people will die', etc.
