Imphal, October 17 2024:
The Youth's Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) has expressed serious concern over alleged slack investigation into the suspicious deaths of Adhikarimayum Bas-anti, a widow, and her daughter Adhikari Mayum Lanchenbi of Haoreibi.
The Forum accused the investigation team of negligence and a possible cover-up.
In a release, YFPHR claimed that the officer leading the investigation team has connections with prime suspects, and raising doubts about the integrity of the investigation.
The Forum further alleged that the officer is closely associated with a former officer-in-charge of the Manipur Police, who is the brother of one of the main suspects in the case.
Despite 24 days of investigation, the team has not made any significant progress.
YFPHR pointed out that no suspects have been taken into custody for questioning, and key evidence overlooked.
In one instance, members of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) reported a blood stained cloth near the victims' house, but the investigating team failed to recover it.
YFPHR stated that the present investigation team has ignored crucial evidence provided by local residents, further deepening doubts among the public.
The statement demanded that the home department, the t)GP, and the SP Imphal West urgently form a Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by an officer not below the rank of SP, to ensure a thorough and impartial probe into the deaths of Basanti and Lanchenbi.
