Imphal, December 29 2024:
All Manipur Women's Social Reformation & Development Samaj also commonly referred to as Nupi Samaj observed 44th anniversary of the commencement of Meira Paibi movement at GM Hall, here, on Sunday.
Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) coordinator Thokchom Somorendro, who attended the observance function, opined that as the elected representatives of Manipur could not speak up or raise their voice against the government of India they remain submissive under Indian administration.
Addressing the gathering, Somorendro also commended Manipuri women for their role in safeguarding territorial integrity and identity of Manipur while observing that the unrest situation gripping the state at the juncture would have been far worse had the womenfolk not come to the fore.
According to the COCOMI coordinator, the on-going conflict not only poses serious threat to Manipur but also confusing the people.
As the conflict is more of proxy war orchestrated by the central leaderships, the government of India is pretending to be supporting the Meetei but in reality it is furthering the agenda of divide and rule policy and confusing the masses.
Somorendro also contended that some individuals glorifying the spirit of patriotism are themselves bereft of the qualities of being patriotic, as could be comprehended from groups of people fiercely protective of the chief minister, with another group backing MLAs plotting to replace the incumbent chief minister and the third group harbouring the idea to topple the present government.
Delivering the key note address, Nupi Samaj general secretary Pangeijam Sobita said Meira Paibi movement started on December 29, 1980 when women bearing torches in their hands marched to an army camp to demand release of a detained person.
AMKIL president Lourembam Nganbi, Tammi Chingmi Apunba Lup president Yambem Momon Leima, Khwairamband Nupi Keithel Semgat Sagatpa Lup president RK Radhesana Devi, UCM president YK Dhiren, UPF president N Rupachandra and Ereipak Enat Chanura Loinasillon president Tongbram Ibemcha Devi also attended the commemorative event as presidium.
