Imphal, October 23 2024:
In a heartfelt appeal, Manipur Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation managing director E Jiten has urged the people to support Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) by purchasing their crafted products which have been thoughtfully packaged into gift combos by the Corporation, and encouraged everyone to use them as gifts for Ningol Chakkouba festival.
In a press meet held at the Corporation's office at Paona Bazar here on Wednesday afternoon, Jiten said that as the financial support provided by the government alone is not sufficient to support the IDPs, the government has been working with different stakeholders to help them secure stable source of income from products crafted or made by themselves.
He, however, noted that the IDPs often spend hours on the roads under unpredictable weather conditions, peddling their wares to commuters.
Taking their plight into consideration, CM N Biren assured that the government would purchase all their products and accordingly, the Corporation took action.
He informed that around 1600 IDPs from 49 relief camps are making many products such as incense sticks, soaps, candles, detergent, dishwash liquid, phenyl, etc.
The Corporation has been purchasing these products and properly packaged under the Corporation's existing brand name, 'Panthoibi', with proper value addition, before marketing the same as a combo pack.
According to Jiten, the combo pack is priced from Rs 1100 to 1400 and could be given as gifts.
Additionally, as per the government's order, the combo packs are being sold to all government departments.
Jiten then said the Corporation is trying its best to avoid any losses to the IDPs during the process, adding that the money earned is utilised as a revolving fund and reinvested on the IDPs to continue making their products, thereby helping them maintain a long-term source of income.
Thus, he appealed to the people to purchase the combo packs from the Corporation's office at Paona Bazar and Panthoibi Arcade, Wangkhei, and give them as gifts to their daughters, sisters and mothers on occasion of Ningol Chakkouba festival.
