MSCW chief appeals for ending violence against women

Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) chairperson Salam Ulka has appealed all to contribute their mite to end violence against women.
The MSCW chief made the appeal while speaking in an awareness programme on "Eliminating Gender Based Violence" at Luwangshangbam community hall on Sunday organised as part of the International Human Rights Day by Thoungambi CLF, Manipur State Rural Livelihood Mission under the sponsorship of the Commission.
Speaking as chief guest, Salam Ulka noted with regret that violence against women have been on the rise and called upon stakeholders concerned to collective work for elimination of violence against women.
She further informed that violence against women can be categorised into physical, financial and mental violence while observing that not every man indulges in violence towards women.
As one of the guest of honours, Imphal East DC Khumanthem Diana said that even in developed countries, cases of violence against women crop up.
Stating that women staffers are also subjected to violence in offices, she said grievance cells have been set up in offices to prevent all unwanted issues.
The DC stated that violence against women can be reduced if women become financially dependent.
Financial dependency does not only mean to have a job but to have the will live independently, she maintained.
Presided over by MSRLM state mission director N Bandana, the function was also attended by Luwangshangbam GP Pradhan S Angou as guest of honour.
2nd MR CO Victoria Yengkhom and gender activist Nonibala Narengbam were present as resource persons of the programme.
