Kakching DC bats for Chak-hao cultivation

District Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Thoubal organised a one day farmers' training programme on 'Sustainable Horticultural Practice for Improved Productivity and Income Generation' at Kakching Municipal Council conference hall on Wednesday.
The programme held under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) - Cafeteria for the year 2023-2024 (2nd Instalment) was attended by Kakching deputy commissioner Rohit Anand as chief guest and Horticulture and Soil Conservation (H&SC), Thoubal district officer Khaidem Malemnganba Meitei as president, while H&SC joint director Yeite Khupsorel Koireng and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Thoubal plant breeding and genetics subject matter specialist (SMS) Dr Chuwang Hijam were guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, DC Rohit suggested that as Kakching district's economy is primarily based on agriculture, farmers should consult and work with department concerned to increase crop production for better income generation.
Noting that the district's soil is suitable for Chak-hao (black rice) cultivation, which has huge potential for export, he announced that a pilot project shall be launched for Chak-hao cultivation by farmers of Serou and Sugnu, who are affected by the on-going conflict.
Rohit further advised interested farmers to contact office of the Kakching DC or agriculture office with their land details (Patta) and identification document.
In his address, H&SC, Thoubal district officer Kh Malemnganba elaborated on various schemes taken up by Horticulture Department for the benefit of farmers.
During the training session, which was participated by over 100 farmers, KVK, Thoubal SMS (horticulture) Dr Kh Premila spoke on 'Nursery Management in Vegetable Crops', SMS (home science) RK Lembisana on 'Food Processing and Value Addition of Horticultural Crops' and retired SMS (plant protection) Dr M Thoithoi on 'Disease and Pests Management Practices for Summer Vegetables' as resource persons.
At the end of the training, trainees were distributed organic manure bags.
