WoD: 2724 held, 18,664.5 acres of poppy cultivation destroyed

Imphal, May 29 2023:
A total of 2,256 cases have been registered, 2,724 people ar-rested and 18,664.5 acres of poppy cultivation destroyed in connec-tion with 'War on Drugs' launched by the BJP government led by chief minister N Biren from March 2017 to May 15, 2023.CM N Biren initiated 'War on Drugs' mission to root out drug menace from the state and destroy poppy cultivations to ensure forests are protected and preserved.
Since the beginning of the mis-sion, the arrestees include 2212 males and 512 females.
Of the total cases, 715 were re-lated with arrest of 984 people and seizure of 275 kg of heroin estimated to worth Rs 550,26,60,000 in the international market.
During the said period, 7993 kg of ganja were seized, 57 cases regis-tered and 62 people arrested while seizure of opium included 1744 kg, besides arrest of 379 people and registration of 269 cases;.
Other psychotropic drugs seized during the course of the campaign included 471 kg of SP tablets,142 cas-es registered and 183 people arrested; 1117 kg of brown sugar, arrest of386 people and registration of 290 cases; and 1695 kg of WY tablets worthRs 847,92,70,000, registration of 314 cases and arrest of 466 people.
Moreover, 18,664 acres of poppy cultivation and 20 acres of cannabis cultivation were also destroyed reg-istering a total of 333 cases.
The district wise destruction of poppy cultivation are 4397 acres in Kangpokpi, 3018 in Ukhrul, 2699.8 in Churachandpur, 2575 in Teng - noupal, 1982.5 in Chandel, 1682 in Senapati, 1048.5 in Kamjong, 733.9 in Imphal East, 395 in Bishnupur, 39.5 in Kakching, 12 in Noney and 77 acres in Tamenglong.
Prior to the BJP government, activities related to deci-mation of poppy and cannabis cultivation were also done from 2013-2016.In 2013, 172 acres of poppy cultivation were destroyed, 635 acres in 2014, 644 acres in 2015, and 437 acres in 2016 .
Also, 24 acres of cannabis cultivation were destroyed in 2014, 24 acres in 2015 and 18 acres in 2016 .
